When can the codice fiscale change?
By Codice Fiscale Pro Team · Published on
Does the codice fiscale change with marriage or a move?
No. The code is built from the surname and first name, date and place of birth and sex, none of which depend on civil status or address. A person who marries keeps the same code, even if they use the spouse’s surname.
What can change is the data held about you. According to the Agenzia delle Entrate instructions for form AA4/8 (in Italian), people who already have a code use the form to communicate changes in personal data, tax domicile or foreign residence.
When can the codice fiscale change?
It can change when one of the data it is built from changes. The main cases:
- correction of a surname or first name recorded with a mistake;
- correction of the date or place of birth;
- an official change of first name or surname, for example by a decree or a ruling (the Agenzia decides how to handle the code);
- rectification of the sex in the civil registry;
- assignment of an omocodia variant.
How do you correct wrong data?
The Agenzia instructions say that to change data the person who already has a code must indicate it on form AA4/8. If the plastic card shows wrong data, the Agenzia FAQ (in Italian) says its replacement is requested at any Agenzia office with an identity document. Pmi.it (in Italian) adds that residents should also report the mistake to the registry office of their Comune, which aligns its data with the tax registry.
What happens to the code after a change of sex or name?
Positions 10 and 11 encode the day of birth and the sex (plus 40 for women), and the first six letters come from surname and first name. If the civil registry officially changes one of these data, the code derived from it changes too, including the check letter. Ask an Agenzia office how to proceed once the registry is updated, and bring the decree, ruling or corrected birth record.
What happens in the case of omocodia?
The Agenzia delle Entrate FAQ (in Italian) says that when two or more people have data that generate the same code, the Agenzia assigns each of them a new code, calculated starting from the one generated by the data. The person does not choose it. See what is omocodia.
Can a website change or issue your codice fiscale?
No. Italian consular pages state that only the Agenzia delle Entrate may issue the code and that no online calculation site can be considered valid (Italian Consulate in Paris, in Italian). Calculators like ours give an unofficial estimate.
Who should you tell after a change?
- Your employer or clients.
- Your bank, insurer and utility providers.
- Your doctor and the local health authority (ASL).
- Your school or university, if you are enrolled.
Ask the Agenzia how to treat documents already issued with the previous code.

Frequently asked questions
Does the codice fiscale change with marriage?
No. The code is built from the data recorded at birth, including the surname at birth, so marriage does not change it.
Does the codice fiscale change if I move?
No. Residence is not part of the calculation. A change of residence or tax domicile is communicated to the Agenzia, usually with form AA4/8, so that mail reaches you.
What should I do if my codice fiscale is wrong?
Go to an Agenzia delle Entrate office with a valid identity document to have the data corrected, and tell your Comune if you live in Italy. Then give the correct code to your employer, bank and doctor.
Why does my code have letters in place of some digits?
Most likely the Agenzia delle Entrate assigned you an omocodia variant: a code where some digits are replaced by letters so that it differs from another person’s code.
